I'm stepping over to the dark side

Postby Scott » Tue 28 May, 2013 8:47 pm

I've tried my hand at everything other than AG so I felt now was the time to go for it. I always maintained that I would never cross over but the lure has always been there and stepping up my game with kits and extract has naturally put me at the AG doorstep.

I'm very much going to be a BIAB brewer. I have absolutely no intention, I know.. I know I've said it all before, of stepping up to a full shiny setup so I've gone and got myself everything required to get me started.

I wanted to make the transition as simple as possible so I've gone for an all in one 40L Buffalo boiler. This means that I can do a full volume mash and accurately control the temperature etc. Everything will be done in the boiler from where it will be poured into the FV for fermenting. This has more than likely been the expensive option as I have no doubt there would be plenty of cheaper options. I was initially thinking of getting a couple of elements and adding them to an FV etc.... but I knew I would end up with a boiler anyway so thought I would just cut out the middle man and take the hit just now. Other than that all I've bought is a length of voil to use as a bag lol. Ordered up a few stainless bits to replace the plastic tap on the boiler so I should have them to add to the list soon.

Gratuitous shiney pic....

So how is all grain going?
I don't regret stepping over to the dark side at all.
I'd rather be brewing.

Definitely getting there. The first batch I made is definitely the best, I haven't quite got the hang of washing and reusing the yeast yet so the last couple of batches started a little slow. One of them ended up infected.

Best thing about it though, it's so cheap that there's not too much lost when you need to dump a batch..... as long as it's not too often :D

It always hurts to dump a batch, doesn't matter how cheap.
I'd rather be brewing.

Yeah I guess so lol.

Coming from extract brewing when dumping a batch was around £50 was eye watering though :D
